Parinoir

Parinoir

Nicolas Silatsa

Edition : First / Paris / Self Published / 1981 / Hardcover. / VG+ / VG+

Small 4to, 144pp. Cloth in photographic dustwrapper. Black & White plates. Text in French.

Self published portrait of blackness in late seventies and early eighties France. Silatsa came from Cameroon to study refridgeration but abandoned his study after 2 years to concentrate on photography, of which this is the result. Very much an every day chronicle of life in Paris and a document of the immigrant experience, with all the good and bad that entails.

Steven Bamberg / Urban Nomads : Photographs

Photo documentary on the Ching-a-Ling MC Nomads, a primarily Puerto Rican street gang in Belmont, Bronx. Bamberg himself is a sort of inside outsider, being a former gang member himself from Brooklyn who studied photography and fine art. This was his first and I think only show and offers a real inside view of a much mid-represented and under documented world which seems to have become part of NYC folklore. With two texts which are also excellent.
