Lyle Bonge / The Sleep of Reason / 1974

Mardi Gras never looked so amazing (or sinister).
Southener and Former Black Mountain student Lyle Bonge documented the New Orleans Mardi Gras back in 1974, and The Goya-esque Sleep of Reason was the result, 96 pages of the most phenomenal images you are likely to see. What's nice is he shot normal looking folks too, and lots of sidestreets, so we get to see the carnival from all angles. The whole book is in grainy black & white and very reportage in style, which only highlights the surrealness of the whole occasion.
